The trees shiver
as November sighs deeply
against their necks
pressing its chill
into the hearts
of the mountains
of Appalachia

And yet
between the crests
of each peak
there are unwavering lights
of small towns
calling out
into the ever growing darkness
as if to say,
"Do your worst,
we will survive."
